School reports online

School reports on paper will soon be reports of the past if Governement plans are delivered. Schools often lag behind the corporate sector and it seems that the use of the internet for online reporting to parents is soon to be a reality :

But for school reports to be online there are a few stumbling blocks that a school or school reporting system would need to overcome :

  • Report Security is of paramount importance – after all these reports will  be of a highly personal nature and so it is important that the school ensures they are confidential and secure.
  • Report Authentication – how does a school validate the parent who claims online to be the parent of the child whom the school report concerns.
  • School report system cost – with the current financial system it is difficult to see how schools can afford a new school report system.
  • Teacher training – many schools are swamped with new ICT systems coming online and time needs to be provided to ensure that staff are confident users of the new school reports system.

School reports by email

The traditional school report is to be replaced by an electronic version delivered by e-mail so that parents will get an electronic record of school reports.

There was a plan for will up to the hour reporting on pupils by 2010 but it seems this project did not quite get off the ground :

But it seems that the idea of digital school reports is still going strong and I have no doubt that school reports will be arriving in inboxes some time soon.

Reports online

Schools are now meant to be aiming towards online school reports to forge better communication links with parents :

This was a school reports initiative started in 2010 by Becta but it seems that the new Conservative Government also think online school reports are a good idea as the DfE website shows the policy updated in July 2011 with no change to the wording on school reports.

The idea of online school reports sounds great, but for schools it means practical headaches. At a comprehensive school for just over 1,000 students aged 11-19 in Cornwall, the deputy head is still consulting parents and students about the format of new school reports. Although a small group of parents will pilot the new school reports system it is not sure that it be used for all pupil reports.
